Lexington man in NC hospital after enduring a shark bite

A group gathers to watch Donnie White being lifted from the boat after he was bitten by a shark.

Cue the “Jaws” theme music. It was supposed to be a fun day with the family out fishing on the North Carolina coast. But, Lexington resident Donnie White almost didn’t make it out alive.

The Cateret News Times is reporting that he was bitten by a bull shark 13 miles off Beaufort Inlet.

Family members say they had been fishing and decided to take a swim just before heading back to shore.

“We had finished fishing and decided to take a swim and cool off,” said one of the teens on the boat. “He was the last overboard and the last to the ladder. As he reached the ladder we saw the shark and yelled, but he thought we were kidding. That’s when the shark bit him.”

The fellow fisherman on the boat acted quickly to ensure White’s safety. They used t-shirts and towels to wrap the deep lacerations around the lower part of his leg. They also called in to let authorities know where they were and that they were bringing in an injured man. They were met at Beaufort Inlet by rescue personnel who were able to get White on shore and to the hospital.

White was transported to Carteret General Hospital for treatment where his current condition is unknown.
