You know that moment when you know you’ve done something really, really bad? Maybe you said something you shouldn’t have. Or you dropped a priceless heirloom? Or you were wasted, drinking while driving, and you ram into a parked police car? And then, all you want to do is hide.
44-year-old Michael Lewis Butler of West Columbia knows that feeling. All too well.
In a report by WIS, the South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating an accident that happened last night in Lexington. Lexington County officials say that an officer was tending to a service call on the corner of Old Orangeburg Road and Platt Spring Road at about 9:30 p.m.
That’s when his car was struck in the back by a Chevrolet pick-up. The pick-up truck drove off, fleeing the scene of the accident. It was found abandoned nearby on Beckman Road.
A search for the driver, who was identified as Butler, ensued and he was found hiding in the woods.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol charged Butler with leaving the scene of an accident, hit-and-run, DUI and open container in a vehicle, according to a report. He is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
The deputy was taken to the hospital, treated and released with minor cuts and bruises.
