Occupy Columbia gifts tent to Gov. Haley

Ah, leave it to the Occupy Columbia protesters to explain the real meaning of Christmas. The message of democracy that is. And, they used the Christmas holiday to make a point to South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley: we're not going anywhere.

Occupiers carried Governor Haley's Christmas present from their campgrounds at the State House to the Governor's Mansion.

A special bulletin was sent out on behalf of the Occupy Columbia protesters Thursday night. Something that we can always depend on for a little bit of crazy. And, this one was no exception. It read:

We are calling on all Occupiers and supporters to join us tomorrow for a march with our tents from the State House to the Governor’s Mansion. Once there, will deliver a special present to Governor Nikki Haley.  Please join us at 4:00pm at the State House and bring your tents! With solidarity, Occupy Columbia

So, this afternoon, to no avail, the occupiers wrapped up her gift and lugged it to her doorstep. And, comically enough, it was a nice, shiny, tent complete with a big, red bow and green garland on top, reports WLTX.

“It’s an ironic message telling her that this is a First Amendment thing that we’ve been doing all along she’s been trying to trash us by talking about things that have happened in other occupations that haven’t happened here,” said Tim Liszewski, with Occupy Columbia.

While singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” Occupy Columbia members delivered the tent which featured hand-written messages from Occupy Columbia members like “all I want for Christmas is democracy for all.”

“We’re trying to make the point that we’re not going away. We are still occupying the statehouse grounds, it might not be the way we have been doing it for 70 days, but she hasn’t dampened our commitment to speak out against what we see needs to be fixed,” said Liszewski.

Ironically, or maybe not, on the same day the email went out a federal judge allowed a ban of camping and sleeping on the State House grounds, after officials with the Budget and Control Board unanimously approved emergency regulations Wednesday.
